چکیده

We present the design of an ATM-based interconnect that serves as a high speed packet-switched equivalent of an I/O bus in a workstation/server. By effectively “extending” an external ATM network into the desk-area, the interconnect also functions as a high performance host-network interface. The prototype interconnect, which we are building as part of an ARPA sponsored gigabit local ATM testbed, boasts an aggregate sustained bidirectional data rate in excess of a gigabit per second. The interconnect design, which is targeted specifically for multimedia workstations/servers, employs a single custom VLSI chip called the ATM Port Interconnect Controller (APIC); by daisy-chaining a number of these chips, and connecting each to an I/O device, we can support the uninterrupted flow of continuous media data from device to device, as well as from a device to the network and vice-versa. † This work was supported in part by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), the National Science Foundation (NSF), and an industrial consortium of Ascom Timeplex, Bell Communications Research, Bell Northern Research, Goldstar Information and Communication, NTT, Italtel SIT, NEC America, Southwestern Bell, SynOptics Communications, and Tektronix. 640-Gb/s High-Speed ATM Switching System Based on 0.25- m CMOS, MCM-C, and Optical WDM Interconnection

A 640-Gb/s high-speed ATM switching system that is based on the technologies of advanced MCM-C, 0.25m CMOS, and optical wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) interconnection is fabricated for future broadband services. A 40-layer, 160 114 mm ceramic MCM forms the basic ATM switch module with 80-Gb/s throughput. It consists of an 8 advanced 0.25m CMOS LSIs and 32 I/O bipolar LSIs. The MCM has a...

ATM has been successfully used in Wide Area Networks (WAN) and Local Area Networks (LAN). A possible next step in this evolution is to use ATM for memory interconnect. This paper discusses how ATM can fulfill the functional and performance requirements in a memory interconnect, and the implications this will have for external ATM communication. We conclude that ATM can be used as a memory inter...

The APIC Approach to High Performance Network Interface Design: Protected DMA and Other Techniques

We are building a very high performance 1.2 Gb/s ATM network interface chip called the APIC (ATM Port Interconnect Controller). In addition to borrowing userful ideas from a number of research and commercial prototypes, the APIC design embraces several innovative features, and integrates all of these pieces into a coherent whole. This paper describes some of the novel ideas that have been incor...
